SSTAR’s partner Maria Zarogianni from CERTH presented the “Life Cycle Assessment of HV Solid State Transformers” at the 10th Hellenic Association for Energy Economics (HAEE) conference in Athens
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a standardized methodology for quantifying a product’s environmental impacts across its entire life cycle, was implemented on next-generation high-voltage solid-state transformers (HV SSTs), revealing key insights into their sustainability performance.
A comprehensive evaluation across all life stages—from production to disposal—demonstrates that bio-based dielectric fluids significantly outperform conventional mineral oils.
Additionally, electricity losses are the main environmental contributors— emphasizing the necessity of renewable sources penetration into the grid mix and system efficiency.
Developed under the EU-funded SSTAR project, the study sets a benchmark for sustainable grid technologies. The results were presented within the session dedicated to the “Life Cycle Evaluation of Innovative Solid State Transformer” at the 10th Hellenic Association for Energy Economics (HAEE) conference in Athens on the 3rd- 5th June 2025. This milestone event marks a decade of impactful contributions to the global energy landscape, making it the ideal platform to share such relevant advancements in sustainable energy infrastructure.
