#5 SSTAR Newsletter

Don’t miss the latest updates on the improved SST technology!

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the fifth newsletter from the SSTAR project!

We are glad to share with you some achievements and news from the last few months.

SSTAR in a nutshell:

SSTAR is a European project that aims to promote Solid-State Transformers (SSTs) – a quite recent promising innovative technology. SSTAR will increase SSTs operational voltage level to widen their application within the energy power sector while improving sustainability (towards a zero-emission electric system) and expanding the beneficiary sectors.

The SSTAR project is reshaping the power sector with cutting-edge High-Voltage Solid-State Transformers (HV SSTs). Designed to supercharge renewable energy integration, these transformers bring together sustainability, innovation, and performance like never before. This results in power grids that are smarter, more efficient, and more flexible.

SSTAR’s Latest Innovations

  • HV SST Prototype Arrives at CIRCE: the high-voltage Solid-State Transformer prototype from EFACEC has been delivered to CIRCE, where testing is underway to validate its performance, safety, and control systems.
  • Biobased Dielectric Fluids – A cleaner alternative to conventional transformer oils, reducing CO₂ footprint while improving safety.
  • Decentralized Cascaded H-Bridge Control Converter

Why it matters

Conventional transformers rely on rigid systems and fossil-based oils, limiting their efficiency and sustainability in modern power grids, with high integration of Direct Current generation and consumption, and the transition towards renewable energy.

SSTAR changes the game with:

  • Eco-friendly insulation technology
  • Smarter control systems
  • Flexible, high-performance grid components

By integrating SSTAR’s innovations, power grids can achieve greater energy stability, improve grid flexibility, and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable, adaptable, and resilient energy infrastructure that supports the global transition to renewables.

Keep reading to see how SSTAR is lighting the way toward the future of energy!
